The Mehmet-Kubaşık Cup was held for the third time last Tuesday in Dortmund's Nordstadt district. As part of the Bundesliga home match against FC Augsburg, the winning team, made up of girls from the Nordstadtliga Queens, were honoured on the edge of the pitch in front of the South Stand.

At the same time, the Dortmund kiosk owner Mehmet Kubaşık, whose family was present at the stadium and also took part in the tribute, was remembered once again. Kubaşık was shot dead in his kiosk on Mallinckrodtstraße in April 2006 by members of the far-right terrorist network National Socialist Underground (NSU).

In memory of Mehmet Kubaşık, the Nordstadtliga 2022 organised the cup together with his family - this year as an U16 tournament for girls, in which twelve teams competed for the trophy.

As a special gesture and surprise, BVB team captain Emre Can also presented a home jersey with the name "Kubaşık" on the back to Gamze, the daughter of Mehmet Kubaşık. Mehmet loved his city, football and Borussia Dortmund. Recently, a large graffiti-style portrait of Kubaşık has been painted on one of the walls of the south-stand terraces.

"Dortmund stands for tolerance, openness and diversity. We are very grateful to BVB for remembering my father and helping us to draw attention to how racism, hatred and hate speech have no place in our society," said Gamze Kubaşık at the award ceremony held in SIGNAL IDUNA PARK.
